Karl Alexy

Karl Alexy has served as Associate Administrator for Railroad Safety/Chief Safety Officer with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) since July 2019. In this role, he provides oversight for rail safety in the United States by leading the Office of Railroad Safety’s efforts to develop and enforce minimum safety standards and to promote technology implementation and non-regulatory safety improvement initiatives for the rail industry. He also serves as Chairman of both the Railroad Safety Advisory Committee and the Railroad Safety Board. In April-June 2019, Mr. Alexy served as the Acting Associate Administrator for Railroad Safety and Chief Safety Officer. Prior to that, Mr. Alexy was the Deputy Associate Administrator of the Office of Railroad Safety, and he oversaw three major offices. In 2015-2018, Mr. Alexy was the Director of the Office of Safety Analysis, and in 2012-2015, he was the Staff Director of the Hazardous Materials Division. Mr. Alexy joined FRA in 2009 as a General Engineer in the Hazardous Materials Division. Prior to joining FRA, he worked for DuPont de Nemours.
